Putin's War in Ukraine: Views from Moscow and the West

Join the UNT Military History Center for the 39th Annual Hurley Seminar to hear two stimulating perspectives on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Putin's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 was based on his own particular reading of Russian history, his insistence that Ukraine is an inalienable part of Russia, and a Trojan Horse for Western meddling in Russia's sphere. Professor David R. Stone, author of A Military History of Russia and The Soviet Union at War, will analyze the sweep of Russian and Soviet history and Putin's characterization of Ukraine as a "lost province" fumbled away by Lenin and others, and a strategic vulnerability. General Peter B. Zwack, USA, ret., served as defense attaché to Moscow from 2012-14, where he traveled extensively in the Russian Federation, interacted with the Kremlin leadership, and saw first-hand the working of "Putin's brain." Please join us for a lively and timely Hurley Military History Seminar. We will explore the background influences on Russian policy and strategy as well as the dark culture of war, paranoia, religious nationalism, and sacrifice propagated by Putin today.
